Many great things are happening to promote a step in the right direction for humanity but they are followed in close succession by something that contradicts how great the event is.

I won’t divulge any even in particular but there are lots I’ve seen doing this same thing. An event meant to get people off their feet and exercise is concluded with cake, ice cream or some other sugary “treat” as a reward for coming out and being healthy.

I agree completely with everything in moderation being the way to go but there are many healthier ways to celebrate being healthy than what is commonly chosen. A friend asked me what to give out at a photo shoot as a Halloween themed event and we decided glow sticks are clever, well-liked and healthier than any typical idea available on shelves right now.

Obesity is everywhere, so is sugar and the temptation can be distracting but it’s up to the population to say no to things that are just plain wrong and ask for things that are right for us.

One event I suggested trading their free ice cream for banana’s or other fruits and was told it’s being considered. But this type of contradiction is happening far too often and people are just accepting because it’s something they are getting for free.

I for one am tired of free ice cream, chocolate milk, etc and want to be celebrated for my healthy choices by receiving another healthy treat. Think stickers, books, glow sticks, etc for a treat. Fruit, vegetables, a medal – all relevant signs of recognition that all ages like to receive that keep us all on the right track.

Consider speaking up and not just saying no to an unhealthy treat but asking for a healthy alternative instead.

One Response to “Something I Just Don’t Get”

  1. I so agree. There is so much more to life than chocolate and sweets. I’m not in America so Halloween doesn’t have the same profile here, but still there is a reliance on sweet things to be treats for children. My own kids see sweets as special occasion, sometimes-food, but not everyone is the same and like you said the temptations are just everywhere. Moderation just isn’t part of the modern vocabulary. Sigh.

On a totally unrelated topic (and you know about it anyway, but hey), I just wanted to let you know that you’ve been nominated for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award and the One Lovely Blog Award. Check here for more information: http://emilystealeaves.wordpress.com/2012/10/22/more-blog-awards/
    cheers!
