J Conrad Guest just let me know he’s given away a book to one very lucky commenter!! Be sure to comment at the end of this review and come back July 5th for your chance to win!!
One Hot January takes the reader on a slow moving roller coaster which lets everyone enjoy the view and ponder its possibility. Joe January, Guests main character, is a constant in a three part series for Guest, starting with January’s Paradigm, followed by One Hot January and concluding with January’s Thaw.
The cleverness of each title, the use of the month we all know as bitter cold, blustery and filled with constant chill’s continues throughout One Hot January. The novel starts with much more character development than I’m used to but I knew I was reading a book outside of my usual stack and left my expectations at the turn of the cover.
I read to know each character and wondering what kind of trouble they would eventually get in but in the second part of the book brought the heat of events. January met a potential client for a second time, this time without her demanding brother and instead with his own friend and was convinced to finally take her case, with her father missing for 6 years.
As a private investigator, Joe January is more curious than concerned throughout this novel and asked the questions I was asking and all the ones I didn’t think of to uncover the existence of the twelve-fingered man and where, or when I suppose, he came from.
From time travel to forks in time to a disappearing man from the past and future, One Hot January covers a time span unlike any other book I read but did so without being confusing or jumping too fast to lose me. J Conrad Guest ended this novel with enough intrigue and unanswered questions that anyone who reads it will need to read the conclusion.
Thanks for reading,
Sarah Butland
